Be their partner in recovery, their partner in compassion

Emergency Appeals update

In the face of conflict, hunger, disease, crises or natural disaster, people do not lose their capability.  They lose their resources, their connections, their voice and their ability to create a meaningful, enduring change for themselves.  Your support, your compassion helps to provide access to what they have lost, helping them build a better future.

Following is an update on the ongoing emergencies that continue to need your support and the difference your generosity has made and continues to make.

Sudan Crisis

It has been almost 12 months since the latest round of armed clashes commenced in Sudan, leading to instability, violence, and driving over 9 million people from their homes, making Sudan the largest displacement crisis in the world, with a further 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and support.  Damage to infrastructure has impacted access to food, water, healthcare services and even banking.  Sudan is now teetering on the edge of a famine.  Your donations continue to help Caritas’ partners provide urgent assistance to displaced families in the form of emergency shelter, access to clean water, food, hygiene kits and other emergency aid.

Ukraine Crisis

Two years after the start of the invasion, your donations continue to help Caritas’ partners in the Ukraine, and neighbouring countries, deliver help to 3.8 million people through access to food, clean water, medical support and emergency shelter.  Over 10,000 Ukrainian refugees are now living in safe, dignified accommodation in neighbouring Moldova.

Gaza Crisis

In the six months since 7 October, over 30,000 civilians have been killed in Gaza, over 12,500 of whom are children.  Over 1.9 million people have been displaced with no safe place to go and are on the verge of famine.  Your donations help to provide multi-purpose cash assistance to over 127,000 people, emergency shelter for over 1,500 people, bedding supplies to more than 17,000 people and food parcels to over 22,000 families.

Afghanistan Earthquake

It has now been six months since the devastating series of earthquakes struck Herat Province, leaving over 1,400 people dead, thousands injured, and over 40,000 affected with the loss of homes, infrastructure and livelihoods.  Donations help Caritas’ partners on the ground to deliver support in the form of emergency shelter, access to clean water and sanitation, medical supplies, food and emergency cash assistance.

Morocco Earthquake

It has now been six months since Morocco was rocked by earthquakes that left thousands dead and injured and caused widespread damage in affected areas.  Your donations help Caritas’ partners deliver support to vulnerable communities in the form of emergency shelter, food rations, access to clean water and medical support.

Turkey/Syria Earthquake

It has now been over 12 months since the Turkey and Syria earthquakes which left over 50,000 people dead.  In the time since, donations have helped tens of thousands of people struggling to rebuild their lives through the provision of emergency shelter, access to food, clean water and other necessities.

Caritas responds to humanitarian disasters across the world, with a particular focus on natural disasters in Asia and the Pacific, helping communities to develop evacuation plans and plan for crises.

When a disaster strikes, the most vulnerable and marginalised are often hit the hardest.  Natural disasters and emergencies can devastate communities and responding rapidly to a crisis is often a matter of life and death.

With your ongoing support Caritas Australia coordinates with the International Caritas network and other partners on the ground to make sure that the most vulnerable and most impacted are not left behind.  Caritas shares their resources, technical expertise and information with their partners to ensure that communities receive the long-term support they need to recover and build back stronger after a disaster.
