Camberwell – Parking Restrictions around the Basilica

Following the resolution passed at Boroondara Council’s public meeting on 2 December 2024, a section of Reserve Road will be closed, in time for the 2025 school year.  Council’s decision is based primarily on concern for the safety of school children crossing Reserve Road to access the two campuses of Camberwell Primary School.

On 1 December 2024, when we became aware of the proposal, the Parish made a submission to Boroondara Council in relation to the temporary closure.  This submission, along with the submissions from other property owners who are directly impacted by the closure, will be considered by the Council at its meeting on Monday, 24 February 2025.

However, I do wish to inform those who are regularly attending services and meetings at Our Lady of Victories Basilica and our visitors that:

  • Reserve Road will be closed from Friday, 24 January 2025.
  • No traffic access will be available via Reserve Road and no access will be available to the parking facilities.
  • Limited drop off and pick up opportunities will be available on Inglesby Road, Camberwell Road, the Butler Street car park and the Inglesby Road car park.  As always due care and attention should be taken when parking and accessing the school and parking restrictions should be complied with.
  • It is understood that the temporary closure of Reserve Road will remain in place pending the preparation and implementation of a master plan for the precinct bounded by Camberwell Road, Burke Road and Inglesby Road.

I understand that this will cause a lot of inconvenience to us all, but I do trust this will help for a better plan for the future for both the school children and ourselves.

Further details are contained in correspondence we received from the council regarding the upcoming changes.

  1. We agree with David Rush. We think that the street is for everyone, for all the people in the immediate area. For children’s safety, we suggest for a Traffic Light where it’s most needed. We had our two children in OLV School, before it was closed, and there has been no problem. We also agree with your comment David, that it is an opportunity with the school to grab more land, as it has in the past (the car park has been taken).
We hope Father Sang Ho that our comment will be taken into consideration.
    Thank you.

  2. I note with concern advice from Fr Sangh Ho and its tone of acceptance. On speaking with parishioners last Sunday they were most unhappy about the proposal. My friend from the Uniting Church is devastated by the severe impact the proposal will have on her church and the groups that use their facility. This proposal seems to me to be a dishonest grab for maximum land under the guise of child safety. I enquire as to what action is being taken to mobilise objections; or is it just accepted? In my view a petition at the church would gain much support. I trust our voice will be heard strongly by the Council and Fr Sang will so mobilise
