Delivering Hope

Many of us over these last few weeks have lamented over the rising cost of living.  What we used to spend on fruit, vegetables, meat, medications, petrol, gas, power and home loans or rent – are all increasing.  This has put a strain on many families and households including asylum seekers and refugees.

So, it was heartening to recently see the wonderful response to our monthly BASP Donation Baskets.  Transporting the goods this month proved challenging.  Fortunately, our volunteer had a big car and after laying down the seats, piling the goods in, they were ready to drive across to Albert Park to deliver the goods which were gratefully received. 

A very big thank you to the parishioners of Surrey Hills Wattle Park Parish who have joined this wonderful ministry and supported this last month’s collection with a bounty of groceries, gift cards and Myki passes.  Thank you also to so many of our parishioners who are involved with BASP through volunteering their time in mentoring asylum seekers and to our team of dedicated volunteers who transport the donated goods to the Brigidines every month.

Our parishes have been supporting the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP) Donation Baskets on a monthly basis for over 20 years now.  

On the first weekend of each month, donation baskets are available in all our churches for your donations of non-perishable foods, toiletries, cleaning products, washing powder, baby items, toiletries and other necessities.  BASP continues to need our support.  You don’t have to wait for the start of a month to donate, you may deliver your donations into the Parish Office during office hours or leave at the church when you attend Mass, just let the Sacristan know so the goods may be put away.  Donations are then transported to the Brigidines on a monthly basis.  If you would like to join the team of volunteers transporting the goods, please contact Kate Baines at the Parish Office.

Donations are not always about money, they may also include assistance with housing options, employment opportunities (full-time, part-time, casual), gift vouchers, travel and phone cards, groceries and much more. 

Our parishes are fortunate to have a number of partners in our support of asylum seekers and refugees including CatholicCare with whom we are now in our 7th year of partnership.

Our ongoing support and collaboration are essential to meet the immediate needs of those who have been displaced.  It keeps many from homelessness and destitution.
