The New Year is the ideal opportunity to make plans for what the year ahead might look like. People make plans that are personal and the same can be said in their professional life. I have already made a few plans for what I hope to achieve this year. The Church is celebrating this year as the Jubilee Year of Hope, which is inspired by St Paul’s letter to the Romans, Hope does not disappoint. One would ask why one year is more important than another? It goes back to the ancient practice of forgiving one’s debt every number of years as a way to restart one’s life. Forgiving one’s debt could be in numeral ways. The idea is to be in a better position.
This Sunday’s gospel characterises this succinctly, when Jesus proclaimed what the years of ministry will look like:
The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to captives
and to the blind new sight,
to set the downtrodden free,
to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.
This text asks us to assess which areas of my life can be in a better position? Which area I can help free someone that is “indebted” to me? If we need to know when is a good year or a good time to start making plans to help ourselves or others to be in a better position, then it is now.
