School Voices – Supporting a classmate

Sacrament of First Eucharist

Students in First Eucharist Group 2, comprising students in Year 4 at Our Holy Redeemer Primary School (OHR), Surrey Hills, who have been preparing for the Sacrament, will receive Eucharist for the first time on Saturday, 24 July.  These students have been working incredibly hard to prepare for this important Sacrament and are looking forward to this exciting day.

Camp Quality Incursion

In support of one of our current OHR students who has been undergoing treatment for cancer, the Camp Quality Puppet Show will be visiting our school in July.  Camp Quality’s puppets visit schools to dispel myths and misconceptions that are commonly associated with cancer.  Performing at schools across Australia, the puppets tell an interactive, engaging story that explains:

  • The ins and outs of cancer
  • Why a person who has undergone treatment may look a little different (due to the side effects of treatment)
  • Why it’s important to be supportive of a classmate or family member who is living with cancer
  • That cancer isn’t contagious
  • The importance of recognising our own strengths and the power of positivity.
Sustainable Textiles in Year 5/6

Last Term, our students in Year 5/6 learned how to make sustainable textiles.  The Learning Intention and Success Criteria was:

They explored the waste that is associated with today’s ‘fast fashion’ industry and why we have a responsibility to seek out more sustainable alternatives.

“On Tuesday, the 15th of June, the senior students used natural dyes to colour linen.  Ms Dunne had very kindly brought in some homemade dyes made out of tumeric and beetroot that we used to dye our fabric.  We each took turns pigmenting our fabrics with the different colours.  We used many different techniques such as using a rubber band to scrunch our linen into a ball, creating a patterned white line on it, and also using droppers to place dye on our already tinted fabric, creating a blended effect.  We had lots of fun and can’t wait to use our sustainable prints on them and make our scarf!”   Elizabeth H and Elizabeth H

Division Cross Country

On Thursday, 24 June, Nicholas R, Matilda D, Matilda P, Maddy S, Sebastion L and Sophie L represented OHR in the Boroondara Division Cross Country at Ruffey Park Lake, Victoria Street, Doncaster.  They qualified for this race through their strong performances in the District Cross Country.  Well done to all our runners for their efforts on the day and a special mention to Maddy S who has now progressed through to the Eastern Region Cross Country Finals – one step away from the State Finals!
