Knowledge really is power

For some time the Vinnies mantra has been ‘A Hand Up, Not a Handout’. While this is a noble sentiment, I’m sure most Vincentians involved with visitations can’t help feeling that the assistance provided is often merely a band-aid solution.

Of course, for many clients, the food vouchers and occasional assistance with furniture or bills is only part of the story. A sense of genuine camaraderie and companionship does develop over time and we shouldn’t underestimate how valuable this support can be. Notably, some regular clients have sought assistance for decades.

One absolute for all Vincentians is that when anyone asks for help, some practical aid will be provided. With that in mind and in no small way due to COVID, it has become increasingly apparent that we need to be more pro-active in providing our clients with more substantial ongoing assistance.

Knowledge
If you look up the Thesaurus for a definition of the word, knowledge, the words listed are information, acquaintance, realisation, learning, wisdom, education, know-how, understanding…. The list goes on, but unfortunately so many of our clients are not in possession of knowledge that could be of significant assistance to them.

Some examples:
1. $250 power bonus: The 2022 payment ended on 23 March, 2023, but a new one was available on 24 March for 2023.

2. Utility Relief Grant: People in a financially parlous situation (and that includes all our clients), are entitled to claim $650 on each of their Utilities (Gas, Electricity and Water) every two years.

3. Gas Concession: A 17.5% concession on gas bills is available for the period May 1 to October 31 every year, but if eligible (again all our clients are), you need to apply each year.

There is always a danger in an affluent society that a degree of cynicism develops towards those on welfare. While that view might be applicable to some, it is certainly not true for many people who Vinnies assist.

It is worth reflecting that most people on welfare live below the poverty line ($489/week for a single person).  Changes announced in the budget in May this year will see Jobseeker ‘elevated’ to $366/week plus rent assistance which is variable, but will still be below the poverty line and markedly so for those in private rental.

By any measure we are a wealthy society that can afford to care for our weakest.
