Social Justice Group

Social Justice Group and Xavier Social Justice Network

July 15, 2026 - 7:00 pm

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 10 Whitehorse Road, Deepdene VIC, Australia

The Parish Social Justice Group is pleased to announce that Anna Wright-Smith from the Xavier Social Justice Network will be presenting an overview of the Xavier Social Justice Network  (XSJN), the organisations with which it works and social justice in action, on Wednesday, 15 July 2026 at 7.00 pm in the Gathering Space at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. All parishioners are invited.

The XSJN’s actions are deeply rooted in the principles of Ignatian spirituality, guiding the members of the XSJ to embody justice in their actions. The XSJN serves as a vital link between individuals and various social service organisations that align with the mission of XSJN of promoting equity and justice within the community. By connecting people with these organisations, the XSJN facilitates meaningful volunteer opportunities that empower individuals to actively participate in social change.

The key partner organisations with whom XSJN works includes:

  • Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP): providing a conversation, companionship, and housing support program for newly arrived asylum seekers.
  • Launch Housing / Education First Youth Foyer: offering mentoring programs to young people at risk of homelessness in Broadmeadows.
  • River Nile Learning Centre: providing mentoring and tutoring for disadvantaged refugee and asylum seeker women in North Melbourne.
  • Wellsprings for Women: Supporting programs for vulnerable and isolated women, including English language tutoring in Dandenong.
  • Refugee Legal: Assisting with administrative tasks and legal advice for asylum seekers.
  • Melbourne Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP): Supplying volunteer English tutors to adult migrants and refugees.
  • St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies): Supporting the local Soup Van programs (particularly in Collingwood).
  • Sacred Heart Mission: Assisting in the kitchens and dining halls in St Kilda.
