The sacraments not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects they also nourish, strengthen and express it. That is why they are called ‘sacraments of faith’.
There are seven religious rituals or ceremonies that Catholics call sacraments. The Latin word sacramentum means, “a sign of the sacred”. The Catholic sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians. Sacraments are celebrations of Christian tradition, life and hope. They share the dimensions of the past, present and future that give ordinary celebrations meaning. Though sacraments are no ordinary celebrations. They are special occasions for experiencing God’s saving presence. Tradition tells us that all of the sacraments were instituted by Christ. They each have a real foundation in the life and ministry of Jesus. Sacraments are celebrations of God’s gift and gracious action in our lives.
