Anointing of the Sick

Traditionally referred to as the Last Rites, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick was often kept strictly for those close to death. In more recent years, the Church has encouraged greater use of this sacrament for illness. It is now administered both to the dying and to those who are confronting a long-term or terminal illness, about to undergo surgery or a serious medical procedure, or who are experiencing health issues related to advanced age. People can receive the sacrament several times if their illness becomes worse or if another serious illness afflicts them.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by a priest who anoints a person with blessed oil and prays a prayer of healing. The prayer is not only for physical healing, but also for spiritual health, and for the strength, peace, and courage to bear the burden of illness. The sacrament also imparts the remission of sins.  The sacrament is an assurance of God’s steadfast care and is one way in which the Church continues the healing ministry of Jesus.
