A Joyful Beginning to the Year

Opening of the School Year Mass

On Friday, 6 February our three parish school communities gathered in a spirit of joy and gratitude to celebrate a combined Opening of the School Year Mass at Our Lady of Victories Basilica in Camberwell.

Our Opening Mass was a beautiful reminder that Christ is at the centre of everything we do as a parish and school community.  The students participated reverently, offering readings, prayers and helping in the Gospel and Eucharist processions.  Fr Ian Vergel and the School Principals, Robyn Thomson, Frank Dame and Clare Hicks, offered a beautiful Blessing Prayer for all students and staff with a special prayer for the Year 6 students and new staff.  The church was filled with the energy of students, families and staff all united in prayer as we entrusted the year ahead to God’s loving care.

Commitment Mass for First Reconciliation

On Sunday, 8 February, all students preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation across our three parish primary schools, along with those participating in the Parish Preparation Program, attended the Commitment Mass Our Holy Redeemer Church.

This celebration held special meaning for our First Reconciliation students, who publicly committed themselves to preparing for their first Sacrament of Healing.  Surrounded by family, teachers, and parishioners, the students promised to grow in friendship with Jesus, to learn about forgiveness, and to practise kindness in their daily lives.  As a parish, we in turn pledged our prayers and support, walking with them as they learn more deeply about God’s mercy and love.

We extend our sincere thanks to the school leadership teams, teachers, parish staff, and our wonderful families for being present for such a prayerful and uplifting liturgy led by Fr Sang Ho.  A big thank you also to Frank Dame and Nick Byrne from Our Holy Redeemer School for cooking a delicious BBQ lunch after Mass.

May the year ahead be one of growth, learning, and blessing for all our students.  And may our First Reconciliation students feel the peace and joy that comes from knowing God’s unconditional forgiveness.

Let us continue to pray for one another as we journey together in faith.
