Homily

Homily – Palm Sunday (B)

The two Gospels we will hear this Sunday will be from the evangelist Mark who presents two contrasting scenes. The first scene is Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem where he is welcomed and received as a hero. Such a reception and entry are marked by a deep irony.  A hero seated on an animal not known for its combat ability. It signals an emerging rule not dominated by force.  His compelling message of peace and renewal of heart was not received by all the rulers of the day. The peaceful approach will soon be met with violence and blood.

The second scene is the long narration recounting his very last days and moments. Was it the same crowd that cheered and welcomed him that turned to cries of execution? The second scene was no celebration, perhaps only for those who masterminded his arrest and trial. The mood turned quickly from jubilation to tribulation. Now they are moments of worry, anxiety, nervousness, betrayal, confusion, and division. Soon the hands that healed, blessed, and held the afflicted be opened with wounds punctured by iron nails.

There are plenty to ponder this coming Sunday. Frantic scenes to stir our imagination. They draw us in with the crowds. Their descriptive nature brings us to this heighten moment. Palm Sunday is the entry into Holy Week. There is another palm at play this Sunday the palm opened by nails.
