Easter Season Homily

Homily – The Ascension of the Lord

The Communion Antiphon for this weekend’s celebration of the Ascension “Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” are words of assurance. Assurance for the disciples who will now be without the physical presence of their Master and Teacher.

I am not sure if the disciples were excited about the opportunity for them to finally step up and do the things that their Master did. Some of us would relish at the chance to show our ability. If it is all about ability, then the disciples given their not so impressive record in the face of danger and challenges, would fail spectacularly. Words of encouragement and ability can only help the disciples go so far. There is something, or someone rather who works and builds upon their abilities.

The words “I am with you always” promises an abiding presence no matter the circumstances or requires any conditions being met. It is easy to forget this promise when things go against us without an outlet for relief in sight. Presence is powerful. How often does someone’s presence makes all the difference? It is who accompanies us rather than the outcome.

“Even to the end of the age” speaks about the followers in every age and every generation who succeed in the disciples’ footsteps. The coming and accompaniment of the Spirit ushers in a new chapter. The Spirit ushers in a third testament. The Spirit helps us write the latest testament in our lives.

The Ascension of the Lord marks an exciting yet challenging period for us to carry the works of Christ into our present day and age.
