Easter Season Homily

Homily – Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year B

If the name Leopoldine Mimovich sounds familiar to us, then we would know her to be a local Australian artist and sculptor.  Many of her works are found across the country and even in our churches.  Artists like her produce beautiful pieces of artwork for us to enjoy thanks to their ability to turn the materials available to them into something that draws us into contemplation.  Art reflects a person’s inspiration from Scripture, literature and even from nature.

If we look outside, the art pieces of nature are on display, from the wind-swept grass to the little rivers and lakes, from the mesmerising waterfalls and dramatic cliffs to the mighty waves rocking back and forth.  At times, the water becomes uncontrollable even to the point of threatening those near it.

The threatening water becomes the symbol of lives’ challenges and the test of one’s faith.  We relate to the experience of the disciples at sea “Then it began to blow a gale and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was also swamped.”  In their distress they call upon Jesus out of frustration rather than faith as Jesus questions them “How is it that you have no faith?”

By rebuking the strong wind and rough sea Jesus exercises his mastery and artistry over nature “Even the wind and the sea obey him.”  The psalmist reflects on the distress call to help grow deeper into faith “Then they cried to the Lord in their need, and he rescued them from their distress.  He stilled the storm to a whisper: all the waves of the sea were hushed.”

The Artist of Genesis continues his work in us.  God is always working to help us grow into masterpieces that it was intended.  Faith helps us see the beautiful creation that we are.

  1. Hoang, your words touched me. How many times have I called out to God in frustration, sorrow and confusion rather than complete faithfulness and love?
    Thank you.
