As violence escalates across multiple parts of the Middle East, Caritas Australia is receiving increasingly distressing reports from its partners who are working amid rapidly deteriorating conditions. The humanitarian toll is rising sharply, with millions of civilians now facing heightened danger, displacement, and uncertainty.
Tragically, Caritas partners have confirmed the death of Fr. Pierre Rahi, Priest of Caritas Lebanon’s Marjaayoun Centre – Marjaayoun is a town in Southern Lebanon near the Lebanon-Israeli border – who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on 9 March 2026. Fr Rahi’s loss underscores the severe risks faced by humanitarian workers and the communities they serve.
Caritas MONA (Middle East and North Africa) has expressed deep alarm at the worsening crisis, noting that already-vulnerable communities are now enduring intensified fear, instability, and repeated displacement. The Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Lebanon has also issued a stark warning about the “dangerous escalation of armed conflicts,” highlighting the mounting civilian casualties and the growing humanitarian emergency. They call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, renewed dialogue, and urgent international intervention to prevent further suffering.
Caritas Lebanon has been responding since hostilities surged on 2 March, and the scale of displacement continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. As of 9 March, Caritas Lebanon reported:
Families are fleeing with little more than the clothes they are wearing, and many shelters—particularly in Mount Lebanon, North Lebanon, and Akkar—are now at or near capacity.
Despite the volatile environment, Caritas Lebanon teams are operating across seven administrative regions, providing food, essential supplies, healthcare, psychosocial support, water and hygiene assistance, and protection services. More than 54,000 people have already received emergency aid coordinated with government ministries, UN agencies, and humanitarian partners.
Across the wider region, tensions remain high. Caritas Jerusalem reports ongoing missile and rocket fire, with families frequently seeking safety during air-raid sirens. “The socio-economic situation is really devastating,” said Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem, speaking from Bethlehem. “We call upon our partners, sisters, and brothers to continue to support us.”
Caritas Australia continues to monitor the crisis closely and stands in solidarity with its partners who remain on the frontlines, delivering lifesaving assistance amid escalating violence.

May peace take root where violence now reigns, and may protection surround every family living in fear. We pray for strength and safety for all humanitarian workers, and for comfort for those who mourn. May leaders choose the path of dialogue over destruction, and may compassion guide every heart toward justice, mercy, and lasting peace.
Thank you for your prayers and support.
