Humanitarian crises unfolding in Afghanistan and Lebanon

‘We pray that Christians, followers of other religions and all people of goodwill may promote peace and justice in the world.’
Pope Francis, 2020

Afghanistan has seen forty years of war, many natural disasters driven by climate change and chronic poverty.  Like the rest of the world, it is trying to cope with COVID-19.  In recent days we have witnessed the dramatic and rapid collapse of the military and the resignation of its government forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes in search of safety.   There is an urgent need for food, water, shelter and protection.

In Lebanon, the economy has collapsed leaving thousands without jobs and half the country’s people living in poverty; banks have frozen withdrawals and pharmacies are running out of medicines.  The country is running out of power, water and fuel.  Hospitals are facing massive shortages and soon will have to turn off the lights.

The eyes of all the world watch these unfolding crises in Afghanistan and Lebanon with concern and compassion.  Here in Australia, we also look on, wanting to find ways to support those in dire need.

You can help by donating to Caritas Australia to enable them to respond to crises like these and others across the world.

Visit Caritas Australia Afghanistan Appeal or Lebanon Appeal or call 1800 024 413 toll-free to provide much needed support.

Thank you for your support and prayers for the people of Afghanistan and Lebanon.
