Congratulations to Fr Frank O’Loughlin on the launch of his nineth book, The Catholic Church Into the Future. A large crowd gathered at Our Lady of Good Counsel last Thursday evening when the book was officially launched. Into the Future explores the necessity of change for the Catholic Church’s well-being and growth, especially in the context of our increasingly secular society. It reflects on how the Church in its history has responded to similar changes and calls us to remain faithful to the heart of the gospel message and to witness that message in ways that are faithful and prayerful, seeking new ways of proclaiming the kingdom of God in our own time.
You are welcome to join Fr Frank for two more evenings where he will explore the book further:
Sometimes the impression can be given that our time is the first time that there has been significant and demanding change in the life of the Church. This is not true. It can be helpful to look at other times of quite radical change. So, we will look at four times in the past which have known such change: (1) The shift from the Jewish world into the pagan world (N.T.); (2) Christianity becoming the religion of the whole Roman world (4th-5th C); (3) The rise of cities and universities in the Middle Ages (12-13th C); (4) The Enlightenment and Revolution (18th-19th C).
What is particular about the changes we are experiencing today? What do they mean for the life of the Church? – for individuals, for our parishes, for the universal Church?
We are experiencing a transition, not an ending!
What ought we leave behind? What do we need to take with us on this journey into the future?
These will take place from 7.00 pm in the Gathering Space at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 10 Whitehorse Road, Deepdene. No registration is required.
Books may be ordered from Coventry Press.
