The partnership between CatholicCare Victoria (CCV) and Our Lady of Pentecost Parish continues to make a profound difference in the lives of asylum seekers and refugee families across Victoria. Rooted in a shared commitment to dignity, justice and compassion, our long-standing collaboration provides vital support to people facing significant uncertainty and hardship.
Between June 2025 and January 2026, the program supported more than 114 individuals and families, offering not only practical assistance but also hope, stability and pathways to a better future. With no government funding, this work is made possible entirely through the generosity of our parishioners and the wider community.
Support provided through the program is holistic and tailored to each person’s needs. This includes rental and housing assistance to prevent homelessness, access to food, clothing and essential household items, and funding for medical and urgent expenses. Importantly, the program also enables access to education and employment pathways – such as English classes, TAFE courses, and job-related certifications – helping individuals move towards independence and self-sufficiency.
Equally vital is the program’s focus on wellbeing. Many asylum seekers arrive with experiences of trauma, displacement and family separation. Through counselling, pastoral care and community activities, participants are supported to rebuild confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.
The impact of this partnership is best reflected in the stories of those supported. Individuals and families from countries including Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are now rebuilding their lives – learning new skills, gaining confidence, and looking forward to reuniting with loved ones. For many, the program provides more than basic support; it offers dignity, connection and renewed hope.
Our Lady of Pentecost Parish has played a critical role in this mission for over a decade, contributing housing, financial assistance, essential goods and ongoing advocacy for more compassionate policies. Together, this partnership stands as a powerful example of faith in action – walking alongside those in need and helping create a future where all can live with safety, dignity and opportunity.
Andy Scobie, Senior Manager, Philanthropy CatholicCare Victoria says “The story of Our Lady of Pentecost is one of deep compassion and enduring generosity. Because of your support, individuals and families seeking asylum have been met with practical care, dignity and hope during some of the most uncertain times in their lives.”
