Vale Father Michael Morgan

The Parishioners of Our Lady of Victories, Camberwell Parish are saddened to hear of the death of former Parish Priest, Father Michael Morgan.  Father Michael was Parish Priest of Camberwell Parish from 2004 until his retirement in 2016.  Parishioners have been expressing their grief, as well as their immense appreciation, for the time that Father Michael was Parish Priest.  Above all, he is remembered by parishioners for his ‘pastoral presence’, his ‘personal devotional and prayer life’ and his ‘approachable and amenable personality’.  He was gentle, caring, and empathetic.  “He was the first one on your door step if there was any illness or need in your family” said one parishioner.  He was much loved.

In addition to his strong pastoral presence across the Parish, he also tackled some large (and difficult) projects at Camberwell.  Father Michael oversaw the renewal and restoration of the stone work on the exterior of Our Lady of Victories Basilica.  It is him that we have to thank for the re-gilding of the magnificent and iconic statue of Our Lady of Victories on the dome of the Basilica.  Father Michael also had to sadly oversee the closure of the Parish Primary School, but facilitated a very positive outcome with the School currently being used by Camberwell Primary as its junior campus.

Under Father Michael’s leadership parishioners were able to celebrate the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone for the Basilica, which was laid in 1913.  The year 2013 saw great celebrations across the parish with many families returning to visit the school and Basilica and culminating in a Centenary Mass celebrated by Archbishop Denis Hart.

Parishioners old and new have much to be grateful for as they remember Father Michael.  A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Victories Basilica on Tuesday, 8 October at 2.00 pm, presided over by Archbishop Peter A Comensoli.  For those unable to be present the Mass will be live streamed

Father Michael will also be sadly missed by parishioners of Good Shepherd Parish, Gladstone Park, where a Rosary will by prayed on Monday, 7 October at 7.00 pm and Sacred Heart Parish, Croydon, where a memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, 30 October at 7.00 pm.

We are grateful for all he contributed throughout the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

May he rest in peace
