Venezuela Shaken Beyond the Limit

On the evening of 24 June, 2026, northern Venezuela was struck by two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude within moments of each other.  The profound impact of these tremors was felt across the capital, Caracas, and throughout the central and coastal regions.  Tragically, homes, buildings, and vital infrastructure have collapsed, causing widespread disruption to essential services.

Rescue efforts are underway but are moving slowly due to severely damaged roads and limited resources.  Heartbreakingly, 1,700 people are confirmed dead, and tens of thousands remain missing.

This disaster has struck a population that was already facing immense hardships.  Even before the earthquakes, approximately 7.9 million people in Venezuela were in need of humanitarian assistance, with countless families struggling against severe food shortages, limited healthcare, and unreliable basic utilities.

Now, an already fragile situation has turned into a catastrophe.  Those who were already the most vulnerable – children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses – are now at catastrophic risk.

The most urgent needs on the ground right now include:

  • Search and Rescue: Critical operations to reach those trapped or injured.
  • Safe Shelter: Refuge for families who have lost their homes or are too terrified to return to unstable buildings.
  • Medical Care: Urgent treatment for the injured and critical support for overwhelmed hospitals.
  • Food Assistance: Emergency nourishment as supply chains fracture and prices soar.
  • Clean Water & Sanitation: Safe water access where infrastructure has been destroyed to prevent disease.
  • Mental Health Support: Compassionate care to help survivors cope with unimaginable trauma, fear, and loss.

In the face of this tragedy, local Church parishes have stepped up as primary sanctuaries.  Across the affected areas, doors have been thrown open to shelter displaced families, and volunteers are distributing emergency supplies wherever possible.  This immediate, community-led response is a vital lifeline.

Working alongside them is Caritas Venezuela, one of the country’s most trusted humanitarian networks.  Together with local partners, they are working tirelessly to deliver life-saving support, including water, food, shelter, and sanitation. Because of their deep-rooted presence in communities across the country – even in the most remote and hard-to-reach areas – this network is uniquely positioned to identify immediate needs and deliver aid swiftly.

Right now, countless families are facing a future of profound uncertainty, fear, and grief. But they do not have to face it alone.

With our compassionate support, we can provide emergency shelter, food, clean water, and vital care to those who have lost everything.  Every donation, no matter the size, will directly support Caritas partners on the ground, allowing them to respond rapidly and extend a helping hand to those in urgent need.

Please consider standing with the people of Venezuela today. Your kindness can bring comfort, relief, and hope to a community in its darkest hour.

Donations may be made online.
