World Mission Day

You Shall be My Witnesses (Acts 1:8)

This Sunday Catholics of the world join into one community for World Mission Sunday – established by Pope Pius XI in 1926.

In Pope Francis’ message for World Mission Day 2022 he reminds us that the Church is missionary by nature, and he reflects on the life and mission of every disciple:

“This is the central point, the heart of Jesus’ teaching to the disciples, in view of their being sent forth into the world. The disciples are to be witnesses of Jesus, thanks to the grace of the Holy Spirit that they will receive. Wherever they go and in whatever place they find themselves.”

“Each baptized person is called to mission, in the Church and by the mandate of the Church: consequently, mission is carried out together, not individually, in communion with the ecclesial community, and not on one’s own initiative.”

World Mission Day is a time for us to pay particular attention to the needs of those less fortunate, to the needs of the churches that are fragile, struggling, persecuted and are in need of our support.

This weekend’s Catholic Mission Church Appeal looks to the needs of our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia.  Your financial support for Catholic Mission will assist them with their work in the community in northern Ethiopia as they continue to create hope and build brighter futures for families in need in rural communities by expanding a farm which they have established to include a goat rearing centre with its aim being to produce nutrient rich milk.

The project is still in its early stages.  Land for the Goat Rearing Centre has been secured however the construction of the sheds, procuring the goats and employing caretakers are still goals the community needs help to achieve.

But their vision goes beyond providing milk for families.  With our support not only can the project become a reality, but many more families can be supported through opportunities such as agricultural training, employment leading to enhancing the skills of some community members to enable them to own their own farms, increasing their income and opportunities to earn a sustainable livelihood.

A special collection will be taken up at all Masses across our parishes this weekend.  Appeal envelopes are available in all our churches and donations of $2.00 or more are tax deductible.
